I. Những điều cần biết về IELTS Speaking Part 1

• Chủ đề vô cùng quen thuộc, xoay quanh bạn và đời sống/ công việc/ bạn bè/ sở thích sở ghét của bạn.
• Vì chủ đề quen thuộc và có tính cá nhân, người nói không cần mang văn phong hùng biện hay học thuật vào bài thi Speaking part 1.
• Câu trả lời nên ngắn gọn, khoảng 30s là đủ cho câu trả lời Part 1.

II. Các dạng câu hỏi thường gặp và gợi ý cách trả lời trong IELTS Speaking Part 1

Dạng 1: Describe questions

• Tell me about an email that made you happy.
• What is your idea of a perfect home?
• What was it like growing up in your hometown?
• Tell me about a teacher you admired at school.

* Cách trả lời:

1. Short answer + explanation + reason + example

2. “The best way to describe it” + answer + reason

3. “What’s really great” + answer + reason + example

4. Contrast two different answers + reasons + examples

Dạng 2: Dạng câu hỏi /likes/dislikes/favourite/popular/important questions 

• What types of animals do you think make the best pets?
• What kind of clothes do you dislike?
• Do you like travelling?
• Do you like using the Internet
• What is your favourite season?
• What is your favourite animal?

* Cách trả lời:

1. “What I particularly enjoy” + reason + example

2. Short answer + “particularly if/when” situation + reason + example

3. Contrast a dislike & like + reason + example

5. Contrast two different situations, using if + whereas if

Dạng 3: Câu hỏi “How”

• How do you think your school could be improved?
• How do you normally celebrate your birthday now?
• How do you usually spend your holidays?
• How did you become interested in your hobby or interest?

* Cách trả lời:

1. State a superlative + answer + reason + example

2. Contrast two different situations, using if + whereas if

Dạng 4: Câu hỏi Yes/No 

• Is bottled water expensive in your country?
• Is being late acceptable in your culture?
• Is reading books a popular activity in your country?
• Do you think animals should be kept in zoos?
• Do you think that bicycles are suitable for all ages?
• Do any colours have a special meaning in your culture?

Dạng 5: Câu hỏi “Would”

• What would your perfect meal be?
• Would you like to learn another language?
• What would you like to change about your daily routine?

Dạng 7: Câu hỏi so sánh

• Do you like the same colours now as you did when you were younger?
• Do you get bored more often now than when you were younger?
• Were you more or less patient when you were younger?
• Do you prefer to receive emails or texts?
• Do you prefer relaxing at home or going out in the evening?

Dạng 8: Câu hỏi quá khứ

• Did your parents read to you when you were a child?
• Did you do any sport when you were a child?
• Did you learn to play a musical instrument when you were a child?
• Were you interested in fashion when you were a child?
• Have you ever been very hungry but didn’t have anything to eat?

III: Các mẫu trả lời Speaking IELTS Part 1

Topic: Work/Study

1.  Do you work or are you a student?

Đối với câu hỏi này, thí sinh cần đưa ra được “Direct answer” đó là việc mình đang đi làm hay đi học.

Direct answer:

• I’m a student/ I am studying (ngành học) at (trường học)
• Hoặc: I’m working as a (nghề nghiệp)/ I’m working at (công ty)

Sau đó, đối với phần mở rộng, có nhiều cách để thí sinh phát triển thêm câu trả lời của mình:

Cách mở rộng:

Why

• Tại sao chọn ngành này/ trường này
• Tại sao chọn công việc này/ công ty này

What

• Nói rõ hơn về việc mình sẽ học gì trong chuyên ngành này
• Nói rõ hơn về những khía cạnh công việc, những trách nhiệm cần thực hiện trong công việc

When

• Bắt đầu học ở trường này/ đi làm ở công ty này từ khi nào

Where

• Trường/ Công ty nằm ở đâu

Who

• Có ai là bạn bè/ người quen cũng làm ở đây/ học ở đây
• Nói về bạn bè/ đồng nghiệp

How

• Nói rõ hơn về cảm xúc của bản thân (căng thẳng, vui vẻ, hào hứng, đam mê,…) khi đi làm công việc này/ học ngành này

Example: I’m studying Business Administration at the Ho Chi Minh University of Economics. The hectic schedule makes me stressed sometimes, but studying does bring me a lot of joy because this is my passionate field (How).

2. Do you like your work?/ Do you enjoy your study?

Direct answer:

• Yes, definitely!/ Of course!/ Yes, I do.
• Hoặc: Honestly, I don’t really like it/ No, not at all.

Expansion:  

• Đưa ra lý do tại sao thích/ không thích
• Điều mình thích nhất/ không thích nhất ở công việc/ việc học
• Cảm xúc khi đi làm/ đi học là như thế nào
• Kế hoạch tương lai (tiếp tục công việc này hay đổi việc)/ (ra trường sẽ làm gì, ở đâu)

Example: Honestly, I don’t really like it. My boss is aggressive all the time and my colleagues are not really friendly. Sometimes I have to burn the midnight oil to finish my work which makes me so stressed. So I think I will change my job very soon.

3. Why did you choose to work in this field? / Why did you choose this major?

Direct answer: I chose this job/ major because …(lí do)

Expansion:   

• Đi sâu giải thích về lý do đó
• Nêu ra thêm 1 lí do nữa
• Cụ thể công việc/ ngành học này sẽ giúp bản thân như thế nào đối với những kế hoạch tương lai
• Kể một người mà mình ngưỡng mộ cũng làm công việc này/ học ngành này

Example: I chose this major because I want to be a businessman. I’m learning the ropes in Business and hopefully, I will be a successful entrepreneur in the future.

4. Will you continue in this job in the future?

Direct answer:

• Yes, definitely!/ Of course!/ I certainly will
• Hoặc: Hmmm…I think I won’t/ Actually I have another career plan

Expansion:

• Giải thích lý do tại sao tiếp tục/ không tiếp tục công việc này
• Đưa ra kế hoạch tương lai cho việc tiếp tục/ không tiếp tục công việc này
• Mong đợi sẽ đạt được gì từ công việc này/ công việc mà mình muốn thay đổi
• Khi nào thì sẽ thay đổi công việc/ tiếp tục công việc này trong bao lâu

Example: Of course! I will definitely keep my job as a customer service staff. Working at this position, I have to put my thinking cap on and think out of the box all the time to deal with customers’ problems and that’s what I like the most about this job.

5. What will you do after your studies?

Direct answer: After graduating, I’m going to work as…(nghề nghiệp)/ After getting my degree, I’m gonna study abroad to obtain a higher degree.

Expansion:

• Nói rõ lý do tại sao lại muốn làm công việc đó/ học lên cao hơn
• Nói về nơi mà mình muốn làm việc/ học tập và giải thích tại sao
• Nói về việc mong muốn đạt được gì khi làm công việc này/ học tiếp ngành học đó

Example: Well…that racks my brain when thinking about my future career. I think I will try to graduate with flying colors so that I can apply to work as an English teacher. I love English and I’m keen on working with students. It brings me so much fun and boosts my creativity.

Topic: Hometown

1. Where is your hometown?

Direct answer:

• I come from…(tên quê hương)
• I’m from…(tên quê hương)
• My hometown is…(tên quê hương)

Expansion:        

• Nói về vị trí của quê hương (tọa lạc ở đâu, mất bao lâu để đi bằng xe hơi/ máy bay).
• Nói về những điểm đặc biệt/ nổi tiếng (ẩm thực, danh lam thắng cảnh,…).
• Nói về thời tiết.
• Nói về con người.
• Nói về việc bao lâu thì về thăm quê một lần.
• Nói về những người thân vẫn đang ở quê (gia đình, họ hàng, bạn bè,…).

Example: I come from Quang Binh which is located in the Central of Vietnam. It’s quite far from here, about 2000 km away. My family lives in a small house in the middle of nowhere.

2. What is special about your hometown?/ What is your hometown famous for?

Direct answer: My hometown is well-known for…..

Expansion:    

• Giải thích kĩ hơn về điều nổi tiếng đó
• Đưa ra lý do tại sao nó lại đặc biệt/ nổi tiếng

Example: My hometown is well-known for the natural cave system called Phong Nha caves. It’s recognized as a world heritage by UNESCO. You may not believe it but there are millions of tourists who visit my hometown every year.

3. Is your hometown a good place for children to live?

Direct answer: Yes, certainly! / No, not really

Expansion:

• Đưa ra lý do tại sao tốt/ không tốt
• Đưa ra ví dụ
• So sánh với một nơi khác

Example: Yes, certainly! Compared to big cities where the air is polluted and the security is not really well-kept, I believe it’s better for children to live in my hometown. They can enjoy the fresh air, have a whale of time with their friends by playing some outdoor games and they will definitely have many beautiful childhood memories here.

4. Is there anything that you want to change about your hometown?

Direct answer: Hmmm…I think yes/ No, my hometown is so perfect already.

Expansion:   

• Giải thích muốn thay đổi điều gì, tại sao/ Giải thích tại sao không muốn thay đổi gì
• Giải thích thay đổi/ không thay đổi sẽ giúp ích gì

Example: Hmmm…I think yes. In my hometown, people cut down lots of trees to make way for factories and houses which causes pollution. So if I can, I’d like to plant more trees and increase the forest area so that the air will be clean and fresh.   

5. Will you live in your hometown in the future?              

Direct answer: Yes, I will/ I’m afraid I won’t.

Expansion:

• Đưa ra lí do tại sao sẽ sống/ không sống ở quê hương trong tương lai
•  Đưa ra mốc thời gian muốn chuyển về sống ở quê/ Chỉ ra nơi muốn sống nếu không chọn sống ở quê
• Nói về việc về quê sống với ai/ sống ở thành phố khác với ai
• Nói cụ thể hơn về kế hoạch tương lai (sống trong 1 căn nhà như thế nào, ở đâu, làm việc gì,…)

Example: Well, that’s an interesting question. Even though my house in HCMC is like a home away from home for me, I think I will come back to my hometown to live because I’m always on cloud nine whenever I’m with my family and I want to take care of them.

Topic: Accommodation

1. What kind of housing/ accommodation are you living in?

Đối với câu hỏi này, thí sinh hầu như không gặp khó khăn trong việc hiểu nghĩa câu hỏi nếu giám khảo hỏi là: “Do you live in a house or an apartment?”. Tuy nhiên, đôi với câu “What kind of accommodation are you living in?”, một số thí sinh có thể xác định sai nghĩa từ accommodation, thay vì nói về loại nhà ở của mình, thí sinh lại nói đến việc mình sống ở đâu (quận nào, thành phố nào), dẫn tới câu trả lời bị lạc đề.

Vì vậy, người đọc cần nhớ, “accommodation” là từ hỏi về loại nhà ở (private house/ apartment/ motel/ homestay/…)

Direct answer: I live in a …(loại nhà ở)

Expansion: 

• Mô tả chi tiết hơn về căn nhà (bao nhiêu phòng, sơn màu gì, có vườn, sân thượng không)
• Nói về việc sống ở căn nhà từ bao giờ
• Mô tả về vị trí căn nhà và những thuận lợi/ bất lợi của vị trí
• Nói về việc đang sống cùng với ai và cảm xúc khi sống chung/ sống một mình
• Nói về lý do chọn căn nhà này

Example: I live in an apartment in Tan Binh District. I chose this apartment because it’s quite close to my workplace, just about 15 minutes riding a bike. I live under a roof with another friend.        

2. Which is your favorite room in your house?

Direct answer: My most favorite room is …../ I like….. the most.

Expansion:

• Giải thích tại sao
• Thường làm gì trong căn phòng này
• Có ý định thay đổi/ cải tạo gì với căn phòng yêu thích này không

Example: I like my bedroom the most. I often read books, play music, work and do whatever I want in my bedroom. I often change the bed sheets once per week to make my bedroom always look interesting and new.

3. What do you like about living there?

Direct answer: I like….. and…….

Expansion:  

• Giải thích tại sao thích cái đó
• Đưa ra ví dụ
• Thường tận hưởng không gian/ phòng/ không khí yêu thích này khi nào/ với ai

Example: I like the atmosphere of my living place. It’s in the suburbs so there are not many vehicles and factories here. There are also many trees which bring me fresh air and a comfortable feeling.

4. Would you like to move to another house in the future?

Direct answer: Yes, I do/ No, I will live in this house for the rest of my life.

Expansion: 

• Đưa ra lí do tại sao muốn/ không muốn chuyển nhà
• Nếu muốn chuyển nhà thì chuyển tới đâu, nơi đó như thế nào
• Nếu không muốn chuyển nhà thì nói về việc có muốn cải tạo gì ở căn nhà hiện tại để nó tốt hơn hay không
•  Nói về kế hoạch tương lai dành cho nơi ở

Example: Yes, I do. I’d like to move to somewhere which is bigger and closer to the city center. Besides, I’m saving money to buy my very first house. You know, it’s not easy to get a foot on the housing ladder these days.
